Your Household Has a Dependency Map—Whether You Know It or Not

America Ready · Mindset Journal

Your household runs on dependencies

A phone carries contacts, banking access, and alerts. Electricity may support refrigeration, heat, medical equipment, food preparation, and communications. When one everyday service fails, other routines can fail with it. Readiness begins by identifying those connections before deciding what to buy.

A household dependency map is a simple record of essential tasks, the people who depend on them, the services they require, and a workable backup. It reveals weaknesses that a shopping list often misses.

Begin with people, not supplies

Account for children, older adults, medical dependencies, people who need accessible communications, pets, and service animals. Decide who checks on whom, where key information lives, and which needs cannot safely wait. A single phone, password, vehicle, or caregiver should not be an invisible point of failure.

Assign an owner to each critical requirement and identify a backup person or method. Revisit assumptions when people move, medications change, or household routines shift.

Prepare the first 72 hours intelligently

Identify sensible coverage for safe water access, suitable food, hygiene, necessary medications, lighting, official alerts, and reliable contacts. Check what you already own before buying duplicates. A prepared household knows where supplies are and who can use them.

Record when to check local warnings, when sheltering might no longer be safe, and which conditions require evacuation or professional support. Real public instructions always take precedence over an abstract checklist.

Rehearse the moment the plan matters

Run a tabletop exercise: the power is out, mobile data is unreliable, and a family member is elsewhere. Who checks official instructions? How do you reach one another? Which supply or record is needed first?

Make the smallest improvement that addresses the test's actual failure. Give it an owner and a date. Readiness compounds through verified practice, not fear.

Build a plan you can actually use

The complete Before the Systems Fail manual develops these decisions across 20 chapters and 80 field tools. For additional preparedness subjects, explore the five-volume America Ready bundle selection.
