Urgency is the attack surface
A message arrives claiming that a family member is in danger, an agency has ordered immediate action, or a payment is required to prevent a worse outcome. Stress can shorten the distance between receiving a claim and acting on it. Realistic AI-generated voices, images, and messages amplify that problem.
The correct response is not to ignore every warning. It is to distinguish a legitimate immediate life-safety instruction from a consequential request whose source and accuracy still need independent confirmation.
Build a trusted-source hierarchy
Before an emergency, identify the official alerts relevant to your location and the independent contact methods for relatives, emergency services, financial institutions, and utilities. Write down how to contact these sources without relying on a link inside a message.
When an urgent claim is made, use a known number or separately located official channel. A logo, familiar voice, or realistic clip is evidence of what was presented—not proof of who sent it.
Verify the action being requested
Ask what the sender wants you to do. Send money? Disclose a code? Install software? Share a family member's location? Forward an alarming announcement? Naming the requested action exposes why verification matters.
For a purported family emergency, use an agreed callback or second channel. For an alleged agency demand, check official sources and obey genuine immediate safety instructions rather than spreading unverified claims.
Keep the process usable offline
A plan that only works with perfect internet connectivity is brittle. Preserve essential contacts offline, determine who checks official channels, and document which questions remain unresolved.
Practice a tabletop exercise based on a convincing fake emergency message. The goal is a calm decision chain under stress, not the impossible promise of detecting every deepfake.
