“We need better SEO” is not a diagnosis. Search performance can fail for very different reasons, and each one requires a different intervention. A page that is not indexed does not need the same fix as a page ranking on page one with no clicks.
Start with technical eligibility
Confirm that the important page can be crawled, indexed, rendered, and represented correctly. Canonicals, robots directives, sitemap presence, status codes, redirects, duplicate paths, and rendering problems belong here. If eligibility fails, content optimization is downstream.
Map the query to the right page owner
Once a page is eligible, ask whether it is the right page for the searcher’s job. Some queries deserve an article. Others need a product page, service page, collection, tool, comparison, or authority page. Search intent mapping prevents a site from publishing multiple pages that compete for the same job.
Separate relevance from authority
A page can match the query but still lack enough supporting evidence or site context. Internal links, topic depth, related pages, entity consistency, first-party evidence, and external recognition can all influence whether a page looks like a strong answer.
Diagnose impressions without clicks
If impressions exist and position is competitive, inspect the title, snippet, page type, promise, and search-result context. A ranking page with weak CTR may have a packaging problem rather than a content-depth problem.
Look for gaps, not volume for its own sake
More articles are not automatically better. Publish when a distinct user job is underserved. Strengthen or consolidate when existing pages already own the intent. This is how a search system compounds without cannibalizing itself.
Use evidence from Search Console correctly
Search Console is strongest when it is used to identify patterns: which queries surface which pages, where impressions are rising, where CTR is weak, where positions cluster near page one, and where multiple pages appear for the same query. The data is evidence for diagnosis, not a command to rewrite everything.
The Search + Discoverability Diagnostic separates indexing, intent, internal linking, content gaps, snippet friction, and authority architecture so the recommendation matches the actual failure mode.
